Chocolate Porridge: My Favourite Healthy Breakfast

Satisfying my sweet tooth has always been a problem when I'm trying to make healthier choices. I love a hearty slab of Dairy Milk as much as the next person and nothing has ever been able to curb my cravings in quite the same way. I've always detested the bitterness of dark chocolate/cacao and didn't think I'd ever be able to enjoy incorporating it into my diet. Therefore you can imagine my delight when I discovered chocolate porridge!

This tastes so incredibly decadent you can hardly believe it's good for you. It's like eating dessert for breakfast. The fruit counteracts the bitterness of the cacao perfectly while the flax seeds add a satisfying crunch. I always like to add a dollop of peanut butter to my chocolate porridge, too, which leaves it tasting like a warm, gooey Snickers. Yum!

You will need:
  • 40g of rolled oats
  • 300ml of almond milk (I like almond milk as it gives the porridge a nutty taste, but you can use regular milk if you wish. Coconut milk is delicious, too)
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 heaped teaspoon of cacao powder (I get mine from Holland & Barrett. You can use cocoa powder if you prefer, but it's not as nutritious!)
  • Toppings of your choice

Directions:

  • Place the oats in a saucepan along with the milk and cacao powder. Stir until the cacao is absorbed and there are no lumps. Bring to the boil
  • Once the porridge is bubbling, add half the banana. Stir thoroughly
  • Allow the porridge to simmer for around 5 minutes
  • Pour into a bowl. Add the remainder of the banana along with any other toppings you fancy - I love a handful of berries, pomegranate, desiccated coconut and a sprinkling of flax seeds for extra antioxidants! Personally I think the banana sweetens the porridge enough, but you can add honey or maple syrup if you wish

Have you ever tried chocolate porridge? What's your favourite breakfast? x
