Five Healthy Breakfast Ideas

As much as I love my chips, pizza and cartons of Ben & Jerry's (I can eat a whole one to myself, no problem) the majority of the time I attempt to lead a healthy lifestyle. With bikini season upon us I've been trying to be a little more strict with myself, which means incorporating lots of wholesome foods and fresh fruit/veggies into my diet. As breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, it's important to me to keep it as delicious as possible. Here are five ideas for an enjoyable morning meal, all of which are filled with nutrients and yummy goodness:

Porridge
Porridge is super filling and great for boosting your energy levels. Pop 40g of oats into a small saucepan along with 200ml of almond milk (you can use regular milk if you wish, or part milk part water to make it that little bit healthier) and bring to the boil. Once it's bubbling nicely, turn the heat down and let it simmer until it's thick and creamy. Once it's cooked, you can add your toppings. I like sliced banana, cinnamon, chia seeds and blueberries in my porridge, but you can add whatever you like!

Smoothies
This is a great choice if you're in a rush/on the go. Smoothies and green juices are surprisingly filling and a fantastic way to get your five-a-day. I like to make my simple banana and strawberry recipe - particularly during the summer months - although there are a huge variety of combinations you can try.

Homemade granola
Granola is undeniably tasty. However, most store-bought granolas are packed with additives and other unnecessary ingredients, which means you're much better off making your own. This recipe from Niomi Smart is one of my favourites, although Pinterest is full of ideas, too. I like to serve my granola with yoghurt and lots of fresh fruit.

French toast
This recipe is a little more indulgent which means it's perfect for a weekend treat. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, 200ml of skimmed milk and a dash of vanilla extract. Take two slices of wholemeal bread and dip them in the mixture, making sure both sides are coated. Place the bread into a skillet and cook until golden brown. Serve with honey, cinnamon and a handful of strawberries.

Smoked salmon and poached eggs
This is probably one of my favourite breakfasts ever. It's packed with healthy fats and lots of protein, not to mention it's delicious! Simple poach an egg until the yolk is gooey and pop it on top of  wholegrain bread (or a sliced bagel/muffin) along with your smoked salmon. Top with black pepper and the juice of half a lemon. If I have time, I like to add a side of sliced avocado, fresh spinach and fried tomatos.

What's your favourite healthy breakfast? x

  2. I love trying out new breakfasts, so that I don't always have the same thing. I am a big fan of smoothies in the summer as they are so refreshing. I am definitely going to try and make some home made granola.
